The C&TS RR is jointly owned by the two States of Colorado and New Mexico.
The railroad has a dual charter from the two States, to be an economic engine for the region and preserve history through a living museum.
This position will report to the board of directors and will be responsible for all functions of the railroad.
This will include operations, finance, and marketing.
The general manager will be responsible and accountable for the revenue, costs and operating net of the railroad, as well as supervising all capital maintenance and improvement projects.
The railroad is primarily a steam operation.
It is in a rural but scenic location.
It operates its regular excursion schedules during the summer/fall tourist season, plus special event trains throughout the year when appropriate.
The general manager must have executive experience in all phases managing a complex highly regulated business.
Railroad experience is desired but not mandatory.
A quality passenger experience is a focus of this railroad from booking through the end of the actual trip.
Passenger and employee safety is the highest priority.
Compliance with all regulatory aspects of railroad operation, environmental, and employment rules is an absolute requirement.
Maintenance of historic rolling stock, structures and right-of-way is important and support is augmented by the Friends of the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad.
A dedicated work force is in place.
Recruiting younger employees is a long term necessity.
Respect for the regional workforce diversity is essential.
Legislatures of both States have been strongly supportive of reginal hiring initiatives.
A management style of respect, persuasion and teamwork is required.
A major key to success in this job is an intimate knowledge of marketing, including planning, budgeting, and execution.
Retail sales are a component representing about 10% of the overall revenue stream.
Growing operating revenues is a vital necessity to achieve long term success.
An understanding of cash flow management, accounting and reporting and, of course, budgeting come with the job.
The railroad receives funding from government as well as non-government sources.
A basic understanding of government cost account standards is a definite plus.
The ability to work with numerous outside constituencies, both private and public, is a major component of the responsibilities of the general manager.
Compensation will be composed of a salary plus an incentive plan based on operating and financial performance.
It will include the benefits of health, dental, vision insurance, a retirement plan, paid sick leave and annual leave.
Participation in continuing education opportunities or professional industry affiliations may be negotiated.
Salary range is $135,000 to $185,000 based on experience.
